Winter is Coming

For those of you who know me well, know I love Game of Thrones! Which is why I could not resist the opportunity - Winter is Coming!     As the weather in Perth starts to change so does the produce that’s available.  Now is the time to start thinking about switching a few things on the shopping list so that your body and health can be at it's optimal this winter.

There are many health benefits to eating fruit and vegetables that are in season.

Below are our top 5 benefits to eating seasonal produce:

1. Taste!

We all want yummy tasting food, right?  If our fruits and vegetables are picked in season this is exactly what we'll get.  Produce that is left to naturally ripen has a higher nutrient value and naturally tastes better because it's fresh. The more sunshine a plant receives the more antioxidants in our food!  Yum!

2. Fresh Food.

When produce is in season it is less likely to have been stored for a long period of time.  Some antioxidants such as Vitamin C, folate and carotenes will rapidly decline when stored which means we receive fewer nutrients from our food.

3. Support your body naturally.

The natural cycle of produce is designed to support your health naturally.  During each season of the year, your body has different requirements to stay at optimal health.  Let's think Winter since it is just around the corner! We need more Vitamin C in Winter so our bodies you can fight off infection.  Delicious Winter fruits that are high in Vitamin C include things like oranges, strawberries, and kiwi fruits.

4. Support our environment and local suppliers by buying seasonal produce.

When we buy in season we place less demand on our farmers and/or growers.  It is much harder for growers to grow out of season produce and to do so often requires more human assistance and the use of pesticides and/or genetic modifications. Simply put, buy in season, it is better for the environment, for our bodies and supports our local community.

One of my favourite things to do is to head to the local farmer's market and buy fresh produce directly from the farmers who grew it! (with my eco-friendly bag and a reusable coffee cup of course).  It is super rewarding to be able to ask questions to the person that ‘actually’ grew the food I am buying.

5. Price.

It’s simple supply and demand.  When we have an abundance of produce the prices go down, which is why you will notice that seasonal produce is much cheaper than items that are out of season.

Living in tune with nature’s rhythm will help us to maintain great health all year round.  We can also make a conscious choice to live lighter on the earth by moving with it in balance rather than demanding what is not available.  Going back to simplicity is key and our food will nourish us for it!
