Take a Leap
Hello, my name is Jodie and my passion is Pilates! I absolutely love what I do and am super passionate about helping people feel happier and healthier through the practice of Pilates and Mindfulness (Meditation).
Movement has always been and will always be my passion. It is difficult to explain in words how I feel, I feel strong, confident and unbreakable when I am at my healthiest. As a young teen I loved gymnastics, cross-country, netball and touch rugby. My deepest learning for movement came from being a competitive gymnast. I learnt at a very young age the importance of consistent practice and the level of dedication and discipline it requires to be competitive. I learnt the importance of training my body in a way that balances both strength and flexibility for optimal functionality.
Along the way I had much confusion of what I wanted to be when I grew up. For me the mold was to get a job, get married, have a child and live happy ever after, but for me, that didn't fit. I believe in following your passion and finding your life purpose. I have always believed in finding a fun hobby that you can make your job and a way to serve that can change the lives of people, the environment or the world. This is my driving force above all else, hence the confusion of what I wanted to do with my life.
Along the way I worked many full-time jobs in the hope of finding something I’d fall in love with. I jumped from job to job because I was quickly bored and needed more of a purpose. I eventually became so bored in my jobs that I went back to University as a mature aged student and studied a Bachelor of Commerce. By that time in my life I new I wanted to run a business because the opportunity to be creative is what I craved. Following University I worked full-time in Marketing and Events. I did enjoy this role because it was highly challenging and kept me on my toes, but my new dilemma quickly moved from boredom to sitting at a desk and being stuck (as I like to reference it) in an office all day. I worked in Marketing for almost eight years, but my body suffered through my experience.
I was highly stressed. I would grind my teeth at night and could not get to sleep for adequate rest. Over time I fell into bad habits which led to lower back, shoulder, neck pain and eventually daily headaches and migraines. I had a reliance on daily painkillers. I remember one family holiday, we were just about to jump on a helicopter ride to see the Grand Canyon, but I lay up against a wall in a ball and cried because of the pain my body was in. My constant body pain affected every aspect of my life.
Eventually a Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) to my right elbow broke the cycle. I knew deep down that things had to change, but I didn't know how. The RSI injury was a blessing in disguise because it led me to begin practicing Pilates. The practice of Pilates helped me heal my body and my mind. It reconnected me to the person that I ‘used’ to be, the person that loved movement.
I began my Pilates study with STOTT International where I completed a Certificate in Matwork Instruction. I met an amazing instructor, Chael Hilton, who helped me with my neck and shoulders. It is to her that I owe so much gratitude because she helped me change my life. After practicing Pilates with family and friends, I decided that I wanted to make Pilates my career. I approached the Pilates Fitness Institute about my new passion and they welcomed me into their teacher training program. Not long after beginning my training with them I was teaching full-time. I spent just over four amazing years teaching there and it’s a time of my life that I am so grateful for. I have learnt so much from my mentors, work colleagues and beautiful friends I have made along the way.
In September 2016, whilst I was studying my Advanced Diploma of the Pilates Method, my partner, Korum Ellis, came across an old run-down room for lease in an inner-city building. I wasn’t ready yet to embark on a business journey, I was still studying full-time and had no business experience at all. I did however have lots of experience under my belt from my past job hopping plus the support of my partner who runs businesses of his own.
In October 2016, Vital Wellness Pilates, a boutique studio in Perth was born and since then, it has been a whirlwind of learning, excitement, personal growth and challenges. All of which I am thankful for. I jump out of bed each morning and cannot wait to help the next person that walks into my studio!
